Lauren McCullough
My husband and I live in South Carolina, where we have raised three bright and successful children. One of the three however, struggled with reading and was fortunate enough to have an Orton-Gillingham Tutor. He learned quickly, grew to love reading and today is an adult who has read more novels and book series than anyone in the family! So when I became an ‘empty-nester’, I trained to become an Augustine Literacy Tutor in order work as a volunteer with struggling readers who otherwise may very well be left behind. I have found this to be a very rewarding way to give back to those in need. However, this effective tutoring is one-on-one and I can only tutor a handful of students each year. I felt the need to do more, and hopefully enable and encourage other students through decodable books. My intent is to create stories that use a controlled phonetic base, but are lively enough to keep reading interesting. Since painting in watercolor is also a hobby of mine, I decided to combine the two interests and publish a decodable reader set of books – Tap Into Reading.
My Hobbies
I have never been one to have a shortage of hobbies! If there is a window of time that is unclaimed, it is quickly overfilled with new projects or plans.
I enjoy my family immensely, and appreciate the harmony we share together. I love to study history and specifically, the incredible intrigue of The Bible. The deeper you go, the more you have to learn! I love playing tennis, traveling, reading, sewing quilt tops, art projects, enjoying small dinners with family and friends and of course, tutoring reading students. Now don’t let me sound too cheesy about the tutoring hobby. It is certainly an emotional roller-coaster. I’ve had ups and downs, peaks, crashes, and droughts. But overall, the growth and achievements of my students, have made tutoring my most rewarding hobby.
