About the Books

Tap Into Reading: Book One

This first level decodable book entertains a new reader with fun stories while working on initial letter sounds.  Designed in conjunction with the teaching approach of the Augustine Literacy Project, this book works with a limited set of letter sounds (a,s,m,r,d,g,p,t,f,l,n,short i, and short o) in order to build a foundation.  Non-decodable (or irregular) words used in a story are listed under the title, and it is encouraged to discuss these words before reading the story.  Flash cards of the sight words are in back of the book.

Each book in the series is intended to help  a  new,  or  struggling,  reader to practice the letter sounds and develop confidence.

Tap Into Reading: Book Two

Using Book 1 as a foundation, Book 2 is able to increase story content and length.  Mutt, Ruff and the other new characters reinforce the initial skills taught in Book 1, while introducing the next group of letter sounds:  b,sh,u,h,j and the c,k,& ck set.  Each story focuses on a specific letter sound so that it is practiced repeatedly.  The last story in the book reviews all of the letter sounds covered to help the student master this level.  As in Book 1, all non-decodable words are listed under the title of the story.  There is also a list of these ‘irregular words’ in the back of the book for the reader to review.

Encourage your student to read these stories multiple times and feel the joy and pride of reading independently.
